Susu Pampanin

Susu Pampanin  is well known for her virtuosity in Arabic drumming, Susu
began her training at the age of 12 and by 13 she was sitting in with Arabic orchestras.

Commanding a range and variety which is probably unequalled by any other Middle Eastern
drummer, Susu Pampanin is as remarkable for the vigor and fire of her drumming as for her
delicateness and disciplined skill and technique. One of the few female dumbek players to be
highly respected by the Arabic professional music community, she has performed with some of
the worlds top Arabic artist and has been sought after by Mickey Heart for his “Planet Drum”
tour. Her incredible talent has not only focused on Arabic drumming, but includes years of
training in the complex rhythms of Afro-Cuba, Brazil, North Africa and traditional Western
percussion techniques, her notoriety affording her opportunities to study and travel around the
world.

Susu has enjoyed working and recording with fusion ensembles, such as, Wild Mango, Keith
Terry and Crosspulse, Stellamara, Jazayer, BlueNile, Vince Delgado Quintet, and most recently,
Holly Near. However, it is in her own recordings, which permits a wider scope for her highly
individual powers of interpretation and creativity, which has won her greatest distinction. As a
composer, Susu has created several works of strong dramatic impact such as, “Behind Door
Number Two” and “The Cat’s Meow”. She is especially noted for her maverick CDs, "Susu
Pampanin and The Cairo Cats" and "Hands of Time, belly dance drum music."
